Lori Sturdevant covered state and local government as a reporter for the Minnesota Star Tribune for 43 years. She has authored or edited 13 books about notable Minnesotans.

In this episode, Lori joins host Steve Francisco to discuss her latest book, “Martin Sabo:
The Making of the Modern Legislature”. She explains how Sabo led a group of young reformers who professionalized the Legislature by creating the House Research office and the Legislative Counsel.

During Sabo’s tenure, Minnesota passed the so-called “Minnesota Miracle” that raised taxes and reduced disparities in funding for public schools. Sabo later went on to win a seat in Congress where he served on the powerful Appropriations Committee and as Chair of the House Budget Committee.

Lori’s book provides fascinating insights into the life and career of one of Minnesota’s most dedicated and important public servants.
